$400 a pound. Is Mokkita the next Geisha?

Southern California-based specialty coffee roaster, Klatch Coffee, made headlines with Best of Panama’s 2019 winner, the Elida Geisha 1029. Now, Klatch has acquired Best of Panama’s #1 Auction Winner for the Natural Varietal, the Mama Cata Mokkita ASD.

This year at auction, the Mokkita received the highest price ever paid for a non-geisha varietal from anywhere in the world: $400/lb. Aromatic and delicate, many judges considered it better than the winning Geisha. There’s talk in the world of specialty coffee—Mokkita is what’s next.

Panama Mokkita is layered, complex, and can’t be missed. Described by BOP (Best of Panama) as, “a luscious, balanced fruit and flower combination”, Mokkita shines brightly in this elegant—yet wild—cup, overwhelming the senses with jasmine, lemon, melon, lemongrass, and candied stone fruit notes.

What’s Mokkita?

Mokkita, a rare strain of the already rare Mokka variety, is currently grown only in Panama—not only that, but due to its meticulous process, production of this coffee is very limited. Panama Mokkita ASD Natural comes from Mama Cata Estate, one of the oldest coffee farms in Boquete. The region’s high altitude of 1,500-1,600 M helps to bring out the bright and floral aromatics of the coffee. Mokkita varietal is processed using an Anaerobic Slow Dry (ASD) technique, which involves fermenting the cherries in sealed tanks for about 84 to 90 hours, highlighting Mokkita’s exquisite, unique flavor profile.

The $95 purchase comes with 40 grams of whole beans, a grind size sample bag, a third wave water pack to ensure optimal pH, and instructions on how to brew the coffee.
