Description

We are delighted to present our East Timor Aifu Premium — a coffee that showcases the dedication and craftsmanship of local producers in Timor-Leste. This exceptional lot delights the senses with notes of floral honey, dried cherry, and graham cracker, complemented by a full-bodied, smooth, and lightly creamy texture, with nutty and chocolate nougat undertones.

Like many of its island neighbors, the history of coffee in Timor-Leste is deeply intertwined with colonization. Coffee cultivation was first introduced by the Portuguese in the 1860s, and since then, production has fluctuated dramatically depending on the island’s shifting political landscape. Timor-Leste achieved meaningful independence only in 2002, and with growing stability has come renewed investment in quality-focused coffee production.

Today, coffee is cultivated primarily in the highland regions of the western part of the country, across six districts — the most prominent being Ermera, Aileu, Ainaro, and Liquiçá. Grown at elevations above 1,000 meters under a canopy of towering shade trees, both Washed Arabica and Robusta thrive in the island’s cool microclimate and pristine natural environment. With its ideal growing conditions and the ongoing efforts of dedicated farmers, Timor-Leste is emerging as an exciting origin for unique, specialty-grade coffees.

History of Coffee in East Timor

Like most of its island neighbors in the region, the history of coffee in Timor is closely tied to the history of colonization. From the time coffee cultivation was introduced by the Portuguese in the 1860’s, production has waxed and waned dramatically depending on who had political control of the island nation. East Timor did not gain relative independence in any sustained and meaningful way until 2002, which has led to increasing stability and investment in improving the quality of coffee production.
